The visit

Le Tholonet A charming village in the suburbs of Aix-en-Provence is a perfect place to spend a day on the nature, while at the same time enjoying famous landscapes that inspired Paul Cézanne. The village is so small - it will not take more than an hour to see it all. Still, you will find a XVII century palace, the rests of the ancient roman aqueduct and a windmill, serving now as an art gallery. However, the biggest attraction of le Tholonet is the superb landscape around. Take one of the walking roads around mountain St. Victoire, or follow the path of Paul Cézanne. If you are a lover of art, you will not fail to recognize places appearing on numerous Cézanne paintings. In the village itself you can eat in one of the painter’s favorite restaurants (now called Relays Cezanne).
Le Tholonet is also known as the smallest certified wine-producing area of France. Modest 45ha of local AOC Palette produces about 1500 hl of wine annualy, mainly red and white, considered to be one of the best in Provence.

History

In Le Tholonet were found the rests of one of the first human settlements in Le Tholonet the Iron Age. Archeological excavations prove that it was the site of early fortifications, that have not been preserved until our time.
The vine was cultivated on the lands of Tholonet during the reign of legendary King René, the last Count of Provence. Longtime abandoned, this tiny vine was replanted in the XX century and in 1948 has received the mark AOC (Appelation d’Origine Controlée).

Practical information

To spend an afternoon in le Tholonet, drive to the south of Aix-en-Provence (direction Val St. Andre) and take a winding route to the village.
Le Tholonet is easily accessible by public transport from Aix-en-Provence (bus line 10).
The village has plenty of parking space, where you can leave your car and then take a walk through the landscapes of Cézanne.
